Typically, an effective response will contain a minimum of 300 words and maximum of 350 words. This task of writing requires you to present your own information about your opinion or position about an issue/topic, or your own information about an incident or story you have experienced. This is different from the task of integrated writing which requires you to use the information you pick out from the reading passage and the listening passage. To perform this task of speaking, you are required to acquire these necessary skills: • Describing a personal experience or expressing a personal preference • Expressing a clear topic statement and the supporting points • Organizing ideas in an effective way To have a successful performance of your speaking task you are required to follow the process and the strategies: Process Strategies 1. Read the question and understand the task Be sure that you understand the question and what the question requires you to do, i.e. whether you are required to give your opinion about a topic/issue or to describe/write about your past experience, whether your are asked to provide reasons and examples or to give specific details and examples. ↓ 2. Decide on the topic statement (for task of giving opinion): Decide on the main idea or choose one of the positions, i.e. you are required to agree or disagree with an opinion, to write about advantages or disadvantages. Make clear your choice or position. ↓ 3. Brainstorm and select the supporting ideas Quickly think of the supporting ideas from your own experience/information. Choose those ideas that most clearly support your topic statement and jot them down quickly. The common tip is to jot down brief answers to the questions: what/when/where/how/why? ↓ 4. Organize the ideas Arrange your ideas, putting them in order from most to least important. Be sure to put them in a plan or diagram so that you can keep track of them easily when you write. Organize so that minor ideas act to support the major ideas. Select examples that clearly support the topics. Your organization may look like this following plan. Introduction - Restatement of the question - Thesis statement Body - Supporting idea 1 + (supporting details/examples) - Supporting idea 2 + (supporting details/examples) - (Supporting idea 3 + (supporting details/examples) - (Supporting idea 4 + (supporting details/examples) Conclusion Restatement of the thesis Now practice the skills for the following writing task.
Essay 1 Question: People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. You are required to follow the process and strategies as mentioned above.
Skill A. ANALYZING THE TASK BY ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS: • Does this task ask you to explain your opinion or your past experience? Opinion experience In the question, the question “why do you think …?”, the simple present form of the verb influence can help you to identify the task as presenting your opinion about the reason. For this type of writing task, you are required to use mainly simple present tense to write about your opinion. • How would you response to the question? You are required to: - Present why people attend college or university In fulfilling these two requirements you have to - use specific reasons and - specific examples to support your explanation.
Skill B. DECIDING ON THE TOPIC/THESIS STATEMENT To achieve this, you have to state briefly why people attend college or university. To fulfill this requirement you have to state the topic of attending college or university and the reasons why people attend college or university, e.g. I think the most important reasons is to gain more knowledge and learn more skills. Of course, there are also many other reasons that people study in college such as to get more friends and increase one’s self-confidence. This topic statement guides your response in four things for the development: - to gain knowledge; - to learn more skills; - to get more friends; - to increase one’s self-confidence Tip to write thesis/topic statement: A thesis statement typically state the theme and controlling ideas of the essay. For example, the theme is the most important reasons and the controlling ideas are the four reasons stated above. The controlling ideas signal to the readers that in the body of the essay you are going to write about the four most important reasons as stated in the introduction.
Skill C. BRAINSTORMING AND SELECTING THE SUPPORTING IDEAS As stated in the topic statement, the four controlling ideas should be developed or supported with the supporting ideas as follows. Controlling idea (as shown in bold face): I think the most important reasons is to gain more knowledge and learn more skills. Of course, there are also many other reasons that people study in college such as to get more friends and increase one’s self-confidence. Supporting ideas: - to gain knowledge (+ example); - to learn more skills (+ example); - to get more friends (+ example); - to increase one’s self-confidence (+ example);
Skill D. ORGANIZING THE IDEAS: You are required to make a plan arranging the ideas from most to less important. (This may vary depending on your own choice). Be sure to put each of the supporting ideas on a separate line as follows. - to gain knowledge (+ example); - to learn more skills (+ example); - to get more friends (+ example); - to increase one’s self-confidence (+ example); Introduction (E.g) Restatement of the question (E.g) Thesis statement People study in college or university for many different reasons. I think the most important reason is to gain more knowledge and learn more skills. Of course, there are also many other reasons that people study in college such as to get more friends, and increase one's self-confidence. Body People study in college or university for many different reasons. I think the most important reason is to gain more knowledge and learn more skills. Of course, there are also many other reasons that people study in college such as to get more friends, and increase one's self-confidence. These days, most jobs require people who are educated and have good job skills. Therefore, the people who want a good job have to study hard and at least graduate with a high education. Furthermore, as technology advances all over the world, more and more education is required of people. Some people who study in college or university want to make more friends and increase their interpersonal skills. They enjoy their lives in university or college and tend to socialize a lot. They can meet more people who have the similar interests with themselves. They can go to uni ball after school and make more friends who they trust. The people who graduate from college seem more confident in our community. These people are more respected by society. Many people want to be respected and to be important by family, friends, their bosses, and others in their lives. They find that most of them can confidently talk and do their jobs as they are more educated. Therefore, most people want to get the confidence through the university or college study. Conclusion In today's society, people need more knowledge and skills to be adapted. The university and college study is a good way to achieve this. Now you are required to identify the thesis statement with the controlling ideas, supporting ideas + examples and conclusion. You can make use of the plan provided in the process and strategies for writing an independent task as shown in the example above. The suggested plan is shown here again to help you. Introduction - Restatement of the question - Thesis statement Body - Supporting idea 1 + (supporting details/examples) - Supporting idea 2 + (supporting details/examples) - (Supporting idea 3 + (supporting details/examples) - (Supporting idea 4 + (supporting details/examples) Conclusion Restatement of the thesis Now you are required to practice writing an independent essay. For this task you will write a response to a question that asks you to present, explain, and support your opinion on an issue. (You are required to write your essay in 300 – 350 words. Be sure to make a plan before you write your essay)
Essay 2 Question: Some students prefer to study alone. Others prefer to study with a group of students. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Sample Essay Some students prefer to study alone, while others prefer to study with friends. Although studying with friends has its advantages, in my point of view, I would like to study alone. The reasons are as follows. When you study, especially when you study some subjects which are hard to understand, such as maths and physics you need to concentrate on them. That requires a quiet environment without distractions. Studying alone can provide that, you can read your books and think of questions without being disturbed. It will help you to understand the knowledge better and to remember the knowledge better. Furthermore, studying alone has another advantage that studying with friends does not have. That is it forces you to think. When you face some questions hard to solve, and there is no other students around you, you have to think of the questions hard and try you best to solve them. This gives you an opportunity to improve your ability to deal with problems by yourself. Obviously, studying with friends cannot give you these. Because when you meet some questions, you probably turn to friends for help. The third advantage of studying alone is also the most important reason. It can make you think ndependently and have your own opinions. You have to think independently when you study alone. No one can give you interference or suggestions. You will not be affected by other people's opinions. That can help you create your own thoughts, not to become a parrot. After all, the best parrots still live in cages. Though studying with friends has some advantages, for instance, it can help you to solve your questions faster and improve your friendship, however I think the advantages of studying alone overweight these of studying with friends. My preference would be to study alone. Download trọn bộ tiếng anh nâng cao 1 DOWNLOAD
