Tip: Identifying introductory statement of the topic of lecture When you listen to a lecture, it is important to identify the topic/main idea that the lecturer or speaker is going to talk about. Very often, this main idea/topic is mentioned in the introduction of lecture. Here are some example introductory statements: - This lecture is going to introduce you to … - I would like to concentrate today on … - OK class, today we’re talking about … - Today, I want to look at … - Well, today, we’re finally going to talk about … - Today we will specifically discuss … - Today, we’ll be discussing … - Let’s talk a little more about … - Now, let me tell you a little bit about … Sometimes, what is stated right at the beginning sentence is just about the general topic. The lecturer/speaker may narrow down this topic by talking/discussing a specific aspect or issue of the topic. In this case, you can use the following diagram for you note-taking.
